Extra patrols are on the streets of the estate in the wake of the life sentence given to labourer Colin Stacey for the murder of rival football fan Leigh Shaw.

Co-accused Ryan Bish was found not guilty and, it is understood, threats have now been made against his family and friends.

One suspect ran a finger under his chin saying: "You're next."

Tension on the estate increased at the weekend with the death of 16-year-old Jay Kensett in Whitehawk Way, close to where Leigh Shaw was attacked.

Kemp Town Labour MP Des Turner today described the new threats as "absolutely crazy".

He said: "I am aware of what is happening.

"We have seen quite enough violence on the estate and it is my hope that the tragic death of a 16-year-old will concentrate people's minds.

"I hope it makes them realise that violence does not solve anything. All it does is create more violence. It feeds on itself. It must end now."

Mr Turner said a small number of Whitehawk residents had been trying to terrorise honest, decent residents for too long.

He said: "If ever there was a time for the good people of Whitehawk to stop these people and to take a firm stand it is now."

Chief Supt Mike Lewis, head of Brighton police, is also calling for calm and urging people not to add to the tragedies by trying to settle old scores.

He said: "We are very mindful of the potential and we are working closely with local councillors, community beat officers, the Greenhouse community centre and Marina High School.

"Everyone has been extremely supportive and with the community's help we hope to keep that potential to a minimum."
