Mid Sussex Council is to step into the row over the future of Haywards Heath County Court.
Councillors are being recommended to send a protest to the Court Service over the threat to send work elsewhere in the county.
A public meeting will be held at the town hall in Boltro Road, Haywards Heath, next Tuesday and a report to tonight's Finance, Land, and Administration Committee says the council should consider backing the campaigners financially.
Council solicitor Anne Halligey says: "It has been the Government's stated intention to improve access to justice.
"The continued programme of court closures does nothing to achieve this aim.
"The closure of Haywards Heath County Court would greatly reduce access to justice for the people of Mid Sussex and should be strongly opposed."
She said a number of different types of user would be affected and the council's own work, including issuing injunctions and action against squatters, would be delayed.
If the court is closed, staff would be moved to other courts at Lewes, Horsham or Brighton.
