A war of words erupted last week after West Sussex County Council's Tory leader Graham Forshaw slammed plans to build offices in the green corridor between Worthing and Sompting.

He said the development on a greenfield site could destroy the area and endanger the future of the Downs.

But Worthing Council leader Brian McLuskie has urged the county to help Worthing achieve its "vision of the future".

Worthing councillors called a special meeting to highlight their plans for the area, which also include land for 80 new homes and improved access for firms.

Worthing planning chairman Chris Sargent said: "This is probably the best opportunity the town has had. We need this scheme for the benefit of the town."

Worthing wants County Hall to back its bid for a new East Worthing Access Road, which would improve links with the A27.

Acounty council spokeswoman said: "We have had meetings with Worthing and Adur councils. They are exploring what they can put together in terms of a financial package. We will have to make a decision on this issue in the very near future."
