Train passengers may soon be able to travel along the information super-highway from their local railway station.

Ringdale, a subsidiary of Burgess-Hill-based computer company Network Technology, says talks with Connex SouthCentral to set up Internet access points on rail platforms across Sussex have reached "an advanced stage."

Burgess Hill station is planned to be the first to gain access to cyberspace, closely followed by Haywards Heath, Eastbourne and Brighton.

Aspokesman for Ringdale said the service, which will be completely free, should be up and running "in weeks rather than months."

He said the finished appearance of the Internet terminals had not been finalised but said they would probably be much like cash dispensers.

As well as at rail stations, the company will be setting up Internet points at public libraries in East and West Sussex.

The first will be in Hove, Eastbourne, Haywards Heath, Crawley and East Grinstead.

In November last year Ringdale donated and installed a computer connected to the Internet in Burgess Hill library.
