SUSSEX police officers today spoke of their sense of loss after the murder of TV crimefighter Jill Dando.
Jill, co-presenter of BBC Crimewatch, was shot in the head on the doorstep of her London home yesterday morning.
Last night a post mortem revealed that a single bullet killed the girl next door who became a star.
As detectives scoured London for her killer, The Queen led the hundreds of tributes to Miss Dando.
Sussex police who worked with Miss Dando on Crimewatch were distraught.
She gave Brighton detectives a photograph signed with the words "To all the lads at Brighton", a picture that won pride of place on a wall of the John Street police station.
One of the last to appear with her on Crimewatch was Worthing PC Chris Saunders, who said she was an icon to police officers.
Miss Dando was found by neighbours outside the doorway of her home at Gowan Avenue, Fulham, south west London, shortly before noon.
Detectives are hunting a well-dressed man wearing a Barbour-style jacket and carrying a mobile phone who was seen running away from the scene.
They were investigating reports that a man fitting the description was seen jumping off Putney Bridge shortly after the attack.
