CONTROVERSIAL plans to redevelop Worthing's ailing Connaught Theatre have sparked a bitter row between council leaders.

The Argus revealed yesterday that the venue could be in line for redevelopment if it fails as a cinema.

But the news has triggered a war of words between political leaders, and residents are also furious at the possible loss of the theatre.

The move could pave the way for a major redevelopment in the town centre.

Two members of the board of directors at the theatre have already resigned in disgust at changes being imposed on the venue.

Chris Sargent, former council planning chairman, said: "It is the only venue for live theatre in Worthing, it is one of the gems. If that area was redeveloped it would become a wasteland."

Maurice Tucker, a member of the Connaught board, said: "People have given up so much time and energy for the Connaught that for the Tories to turn round and say this is an insult."

But Coun Steven Waight, Worthing Council's incoming chairman of policy and resources, says redevelopment at the Connaught site is an option.

He said: "It's obvious that this is a possibility, but we will look at the best way forward when the time comes."
