MARKET traders fear hundreds of jobs across Sussex could be at risk if they are not found a new permanent home.
Brighton and Hove Council's lease to the users of Brighton Wholesale Market in Circus Street expires next March.
The wholesalers say if somewhere else is not found for them soon, Sussex may lose its only large fruit and vegetable supply unit, with retailers, caterers and the tourist trade all suffering.
Market representative Peter Hale said: "We are the only large supply centre in Sussex for local retailers and caterers. If we close, people will go out of business or be forced to close down.
"All the retailers at places like the Open Market and independent greengrocers are working 12-hour days anyway. If they had to go up to Covent Garden every day it would mean extra effort and spending a lot more money on transport."
The council has successfully applied for planning permission to redevelop the town centre Wholesale Market site.
The wholesalers feel their needs have not been taken into account and are asking for a longer lease until 2002 to give them breathing space.
They have even offered to purchase the site or administer it themselves if this is not possible.
Mr Hale said: "We are looking to relocate, but it is very difficult to find somewhere with adequate space and access for customers and wholesalers.
"We want to stay in the area. We've had a look at Shoreham and other sites, but they've all fallen through."
The wholesalers, who supply businesses all over Sussex and surrounding areas, would need 20,000sq ft with good access to main roads and space for parking.
Wayne Priddle, of estate agents Carr and Priddle, who are representing the wholesalers, said: "It's apparent that moving somewhere else will be extremely difficult because of the lack of sites. I'm surprised the council has not sought to facilitate a move to one of its own properties."
ABrighton and Hove Council spokesman said: "There is a general consensus that the building is no longer appropriate for use as a wholesale market.
"The council has been working with the traders' agent for the past 18 months to help facilitate their move to new premises.
"Issues regarding compensation have been under discussion throughout this period. The length of the lease is now a matter for the courts to decide as there is a difference of opinion."
