Worthing conceded two goals in the last six minutes to dive to a 3-1 defeat at Grays in division one of the Ryman League.
Striker Vinny John scored twice for the hosts to sink Rebels, who began with Guy and Miles Rutherford and Paul Thomas on the bench because of late arrival.
Worthing had an early shock when John scored from close in on four minutes, but Paul Kennett levelled 11 minutes later by heading in a free kick by Simon Funnell.
Adie Miles, leading the attack with Funnell and Tony Holden, went close before Rebels' keeper Lee Bray saved well from Jamie Reilly.
Worthing could have gone in front five minutes before the break when Grays' keeper Ian Brooks could only parry a left-foot shot by Funnell and Kennett put the rebound wide.
Miles struck a post on 76 minutes and Rebels were left to regret this miss as Reilly put Grays ahead on 84 minutes and, with Worthing pushing up, John ran through unchallenged to round Bray and make it 3-1 in the last minute.
St Leonards felt the full force of Folkestone Invicta as the Dr Marten's Eastern Division leaders claimed a 4-1 win at Cheriton Road.
Two goals in three minutes just after the half hour undid all Saints' good work early on.
Simon Fox twice forced good saves out of the home keeper and an offside flag denied Carlton Chatelier.
Former St Leonard's winger Brett Smith opened the scoring and soon after Nicky Dent swept in a second.
John Rattray should have reduced the arrears soon after half time but dragged his finish wide.
Ex-Hastings striker Dent made him pay by scoring twice in four minutes to complete his hat-trick.
Chatelier pulled one back on 69 minutes.
In the second round of the Ryman League Cup, premier division Billericay Town won 3-1 at Lewes.
Billericay took the lead on 27 minutes with their third good chance. A cross from former Lewes and Albion player Stafford Browne found Cooper unmarked and he drove the ball past Paul Rogers.
In the 38th minute, Lewes equalised after a flowing move in which Gareth Batty fed Jason Reed up the right.
His pass inside found Tommy Pattenden in the clear, and he drew the keeper before slotting the ball into the net.
Lewes fell behind again two minutes after the break when Rogers saved at full stretch from Cooper but was bundled over the line by Browne when clutching the ball.
Billericay scored their third on the hour mark when a measured cross from the left found Browne, who clinically netted.
