A boy of 13 was killed on the first day of the new millennium when he was knocked down by a car which also hit his father and younger brother.
The tragedy happened as the three were walking home in the village of Barnham, near Bognor.
They were hit by a Ford Mondeo which went out of control and mounted the pavement.
The boy was named as Robert Kilroy, of Barnham Road, Eastergate.
His 11-year-old brother and their 43-year-old father escaped with bruising.
They were treated at St Richard's Hospital, Chichester, and later allowed home.
Police say the New Year's Day accident happened just before 6.30pm on the B2233 main Barnham Road which runs through the centre of the village.
The driver of the Mondeo has not been named.
