LEWES insisted they had no regrets after losing 48-3 in their tough NPI Cup fifth round tie at Truro.

The under-strength visitors swallowed the disappointment of conceding eight tries to enjoy a memorable weekend in Cornwall.

Players had to chip in to meet travelling costs in the region of £2,000.

NPI covered half that bill, though another £500 may be forthcoming after the club told the sponsors of their plight.

Chairman Terry Powell said: "Games like this are the spice of junior rugby and we had to go on a point of principle.

"If a sponsor is getting exposure from an event like this, they should be willing to cover all reasonable travelling expenses."

A penalty from Gordon Denslow gave Lewes some consolation as they were given a torrid afternoon by the home eight.

Powell added: "We were disappointed with our performance but they were a very good pack of forwards and they would win our league without any doubt.

"But rugby players are very resilient people and we had a great time off the pitch. Trips like this are good for team morale."
