EIGHT people fled to safety when fire broke out in a flat in Hove early today.
The blaze started in a
top-floor flat in Lansdowne Place shortly after 4am.
Residents in adjoining flats evacuated to the street as fire crews tackled the outbreak.
It was feared the woman occupant was still in the flat and firefighters carried out a search but no one was found.
The fire caused extensive damage to a mattress and other furniture. A candle or discarded cigarette is thought to have been the cause.
