A FAMILY escaped when fire broke out in a bedroom and ripped through their house before killing their pet snakes and birds.
The blaze started in the first-floor of the end-of-terrace house in Palmer Road, Angmering, at 2.15pm yesterday.
The family all managed to get out of the house before fire crews from East Preston, Arundel and Worthing arrived.
Smoke poured from the roof and severely smoke-logged the first floor.
Jon Mays, station commander at East Preston, said: "There were extreme conditions and we had to ventilate the premises by smashing windows."
He said the fire was caused accidentally.
