A full safety review has been carried out on Eastbourne Pier after the second fire there in just over a month.

Pier bosses announced that a nightclub hit by fire at the weekend has now re-opened and gave assurances that the attraction was safe.

Manager Andy Fuller said the cause of a fire that sparked a full-scale evacuation on Friday was still being investigated.

He said: "The most important thing is that everyone was evacuated safely."

More than 100 people had to leave the Atlantis nightclub at the end of the pier when a neon sign above the entrance to a bar caught fire.

The blaze spread quickly to a wooden facade on the

Victorian pier as security guards evacuated clubbers.

More than 25 firefighters tackled the blaze. No one was injured and only minor damage was caused.

The Eastbourne lifeboat was alerted but was not needed.

Mr Fuller said: "We have since carried out a full safety review but we have found nothing that has led us to make any changes."

An operation involving police, firefighters, the

Coastguard and pier staff was carried out last year to prepare an action plan for emergencies.

Last month, the plan was used to deal with a fire in a fast food restaurant in the amusement arcade which also led to an evacuation but caused only minor damage.

Mr Fuller said: "We work very hard on safety and that helps in dealing with these emergencies quickly and safely.

"People can come to Eastbourne Pier knowing it is a safe place to visit and have fun."
