CAMPAIGNERS are set to win their battle against a multinational company over a controversial development.

Nearly 100 residents in Heathfield have been fighting to stop bosses at Petromar PLC building a petrol station in the High Street.

Residents launched petitions and a letter-writing campaign after the multi-million pound company revealed plans to convert an old car showroom into a filling station, shop and car wash.

Campaigners claimed the development would cause traffic congestion, noise, smell and would cause an obstruction to Heathfield Fire Station, which stands opposite the site.

They also claimed the increased traffic would prove dangerous to pupils attending Cross-in-Hand School, many of whom cross the High Street each day.

Wealden District Council's area plans south sub-committee will consider the plan at its meeting in Hailsham on Thursday.

Planning officers have backed residents by recommending councillors throw out the scheme.

Concerns have also come from environmental health officers over air and noise pollution and from the Highway Authority over traffic congestion and potential accidents.

The news has delighted the residents and parish councillors who objected to the development.

Parish council clerk Diana Francis said: "Our meeting was packed when we discussed this and we certainly welcome the news that planning officers have called for it to be refused."

One campaigner, who asked not to be named, said: "We just hope the council sees sense and rejects the plan once and for all."
