Councillors are setting tough targets to get multi-million pound schemes up and running.

Brighton and Hove Council has produced a performance plan outlining progress expected this year on eight key projects with other partners.

It says:

l A scheme for the £30 million restoration of the West Pier will be agreed and planning permission granted.

l Work will start on the £30 million redevelopment of the King Alfred Leisure Centre, in Hove.

l A new scheme will be chosen for revitalising the Black Rock leisure area and planning permission given.

l Planning permission will be granted for redeveloping the Brighton Centre and a private sector partner chosen.

l Two venues will be finished as part of the £50 million redevelopment of the Dome complex.

l The first phase of the renovated museum and art gallery will be finished, including finishing the new education pavilion and two new art galleries.

l The bidder for the new central library scheme will be chosen and planning permission granted.

l A planning application will be lodged for Brighton and Hove Albion's new home and funding put in place.

The council is already promoting Brighton and Hove as a new city in The Place To Be Campaign.

Under its new performance plan, the resort is also earmarked as The Place to Invest.

The plan says: "Key development projects are driving forward the regeneration of this dynamic seaside city, strengthening the economy, maintaining and creating jobs and improving the quality of life for local people.

"Over the next few years we will have achieved a new-look beachfront, a state-of-the-art new central library, a world class concert hall, a superb new museum and art gallery and the only Grade I listed pier in the country."
