Sussex cycling duo Mark Jones and John Limpus have triumphed again.

They followed up their win in the recent Sussex CA team event by gaining a hard-fought victory in the Poole Wheelers 25-mile team race.

The GS Stella pair clocked exactly 54 minutes to beat host riders Simon Saunders and Roy Page (SP Systems) by six seconds, with Hampshire's Malcolm Cox and Andy Rivett (St Raphael) third (54min.23sec). Jones and Limpus will now be favourites for the East Sussex CA's two-up event at Hailsham on Sunday.

East Grinstead's Steve Dennis finished third in the gruelling Lewes Wanderers Road Race in Ashdown Forest won by Surrey's Warren Jesse (VC Meudon). The 52-mile race included four climbs of the three-mile long Chuck Hatch, just south of Hartfield.

Dennis, riding strongly, was largely responsible for himself and two other riders being left at the front by the start of the final Chuck Hatch climb and paid for his efforts.

Mark Sussex, riding for new Uckfield club In Gear, finished ninth and East Grinstead's Andy Seltzer tenth.

Keymer's Richard Sutton (VC Etoile) was second in the Southern Counties 25-mile time trial at Broadbridge Heath. Sutton recorded 57min.31sec, lmin.47sec behind Londoner Peter Hamilton (34th Nomads).

Mike Thyer (Horsham Riders) won the Grand Veterans' event in the Tantric mountain bike races at Bordon in Hampshire.

Horsham's Carl Smith finished eighth in the juvenile category. Paul Byford and Jerry Manthorpe were third and 13th in the Masters race, while VC Etoile riders Simon Scarebrook and Andrew Scarebrook finished 17th and 21st.

Brighton Mitre plan to stage The Mitre Mile on Madeira Drive in September. The club say they have the backing of Brighton and Hove Council.

The riders will race two at a time along a half-mile course, then turn and sprint back to the finish where each will be timed. Promoter Mark Farley hopes to attract a star-studded field.
