Worthing's Leisure Centre and Aquarena could both be demolished and replaced with a multi-million- pound sports complex.
The idea has been tabled by consultants PMP during secret talks with councillors.PMP suggested the demolition and redevelopment of the leisure centre in Shaftesbury Avenue to provide a new swimming pool and indoor tennis centre.
The Aquarena site in Brighton Road, possibly including the popular paddling pool and the boating lake, would be sold for homes or a restaurant and the proceeds, combined with a Lawn Tennis Association grant and private investment, would pay for the new complex.
But it could mean the all-weather pitch facility and the athletics track being re-sited to the Manor Sports Ground in Broadwater Road.
Councillors have already voiced concerns about the impact of extra traffic from a major new centre in the Shaftesbury Avenue area.
They also want to know what plans Worthing Sixth Form College has for its site, which includes playing fields.
Last September, the council agreed to spend £25,000 on a study into the future of the 30-year-old Aquarena, which is falling into disrepair.
Councillors regard Shaftesbury Avenue as the "flagship" option but they are also considering two alternative sites, including West Durrington and Davison Leisure Centre, in East Worthing.
Coun Steven Waight said: "We have been looking at alternative swimming provision and whether we should replace or rebuild the Aquarena. But we are trying to keep our options open."
