Sussex Second XI were hit by an unbeaten 106 by top order batsman Rainait Khan as Derbyshire declared on 300-7 in the Championship match at Hove

Openers Wasim Khan and James Chadburn were offered the light before Sussex could make a start to their reply.

The whole of the first day's play on Wednesday was lost to rain, and two forfeitures could be on the cards today with Sussex chasing a target of 301 to win a one-innings match.

Sussex, third in the Championship last year, made an encouraging start with Kevin Dean and Ben Spendlove being sent back by Paul Havell and Billy Taylor for ducks with only 19 on the board.

But, after opener Luke Sutton was caught behind off Michael Yardey for 32, Khan joined forces with Simon Lacey in a fourth-wicket stand of 119.

Off-spinner Justin Bates, who got through 23.5 overs to take 2-68, ended Lacey's resistance by having him caught at square leg by Taylor for 58.

The persevering Taylor claimed his second victim by bowling Tom Lungley (13) and trialist Ben Trott, released by Somerset at the end of last season, then removed Kevin Shah for nine.

Skipper Bates grabbed Sussex's seventh wicket just before the six o'clock declaration when Nick Dumelow skied him to Havell at deep mid wicket for a single.

Rainait, who hails from Birmingham and is English qualified, batted steadily to complete his century in just over five hours off 259 deliveries.

He had something of a scare early on when caught off a no-ball from Taylor.

Disappointingly for Sussex, they conceded 76 extras, the second top score of the innings, and 32 were no balls, while wides counted for 20.

Sussex are fielding two trialists with pace bowler Trott being joined by Irish wicket keeper Andy Patterson, younger brother of Surrey fast bowler Mark.

Sussex saw a second successive day washed out against Gloucestershire in Bristol.

Chris Adams' side have yet to bowl a ball in their County Championship second division campaign and unless there is some creative declaring when play does get underway, a draw already looks a likely result.
