Cloaked figures can be seen huddled hauntingly in the cloisters of Chichester Cathedral.
From a distance they look like monks engaged deep in conspiratorial discussion, but they are in fact sculptures by the renowned Midhurst artist Philip Jackson.
He is staging a retrospective exhibition of his work at the cathedral for the Chichester Festival, which started yesterday and runs to July 23.
A new multi-figure centrepiece for the show was kept under wraps until yesterday.
The grounds of the cathedral have inspired Mr Jackson and provide a perfect setting for his work.
He said: "I am very affected by the buildings of the cathedral.
When you work here you can't help but be caught up by the visual resonance of the buildings and the way they has developed over the centuries.
"I'm fascinated by enclosed communities, like a cathedral, and the conspiracies and intrigues that can grow within these institutions."
A specialist team worked flat out for four days to install the 36 statues at the cathedral.
