Does the media ever give thought to the chaos it create when giving out partial information instead of the full facts?
Glaxo Pharmaceuticals may well be very happy to promote their new product Zyban to assist those wishing to give up smoking (Argus, June 27), but what is the point when GPs have been advised not to issue NHS prescriptions for this drug?
Considerable time is being wasted on unnecessary appointments and inevitably patients are disappointed when told that Zyban cannot be issued on prescription at present.
There should have been more communication with the health authorities before a blanket announcement was made which has done nothing more than raise hopes, create disappointment and waste everyone's time.
The BBC and GMTV have most certainly not done GPs any favours and have only succeeded in increasing their workload unnecessarily.
