Britain's first internet music radio portal is to be launched in Brighton by the man who created Surf 107.2.

RadioRevolution is the brainchild of Eugene Perera, who founded Surf after setting up radio stations in Manchester and Yorkshire.

The site is expected to create 40 new jobs at its Old Steine headquarters in the next six months.

It will feature six channels of music, broadcasting 24 hours a day. Listeners will be able to link to special programmes and video of their favourite artists as their records play.

They will also be able to buy records heard on the site.

The channels will go live in the autumn.

Links to other radio stations across the world will also be available.

Mr Perera said: "We're proud to be the UK's first music radio portal site.

"In a marketplace dominated by US-based webcasters, it's time for the UK to produce a world-class initiative."

Mr Perera has been joined by former Ministry of Sound website content manager JJ Maurage and Daniel Nathan, a former music radio producer for the BBC.

Mr Maurage explained the web firm hopes to make money through selling its expertise to companies hoping to set up their own radio stations.

It will also raise cash by selling audio and banner advertising and take a cut of CD sales.

He said listening to internet radio could be slow and expensive but this is set to change.

In the US broadband, permanently-connected internet links are common and the internet radio is a major commercial force, he said.

He said: "We will start off aiming at students and people working in offices who have access to cheap, fast internet access."
