I regularly use public transport and I applaud Adam Trimingham's arguments for the establishment of a comprehensive transport policy to dissuade people from making unnecessary journeys by private car (Argus, July 20).

However, cyclists must accept more responsibility for the safety of themselves and the public. Too frequently I have to give way to cyclists bearing down on me as I walk along a pavement. It is also common to see them cycle across pelican crossings and happily riding through a red traffic light as though such controls do not apply to them.

In the event of an accident involving other people and/or their possessions, there would be little or no redress. All cyclists should, as every motorist must, either pay a tax for the privilege of using the highways, take out a third party insurance policy or, preferably, both.
