During the past three weeks, many thousands of pounds have been spent by the police, first in the search for little Sarah Payne and now in pursuit of her killer.
It is right no expense is spared and no one would begrudge a penny of it but, nevertheless, such a shortfall has to be accounted for.
What a wonderful gesture it would be if the National Lottery Commission was to make a generous and unsolicited award to help fund the hunt and bring Sarah's killer to justice. What a worthy cause that would be!
