Albion have been foiled in another bid to buy a target man.
But boss Micky Adams still hopes to have a new striker in place for Saturday's friendly against Sheffield Wednesday at Wihtdean.
Adams revealed to a fans' forum at Brighton Racecourse last night, "As of 10 o'clock this morning we thought we had a deal.
"We agreed a deal with the manager, but by 11 o'clock it had broken down.
"We will be pursuing it over the next 24 or 48 hours and I am hoping by Saturday we will have a new centre forward.
"If that doesn't come off we have another option."
Adams also confirmed he is now pursuing an experienced goalkeeper to join Michels Kuipers and Will Packham following Mark Walton's move to Cardiff.
