Mark Sumpter needs just four points to claim the British GTO title after another terrific win with race partner Mike Jordan.
There are four races left for Sussex driver Sumpter and Jordan to win their class in the Privilege Insurance British GT Championship.
At the eighth round of the series at Croft in North Yorkshire, the team survived a cliff-hanger of a finish to snatch victory in their Paragon Porsche-entered Porsche 911GT3R.
With Jordan away racing his TVR Tuscan at Oulton Park on Saturday, Five Ashes driver Sumpter had both qualifying sessions to himself and set a scorching pace in the first session.
His best time in the morning session of 1min 23.282sec represented the car's best ever lap at the circuit and set the pace in GTO class.
Sumpter's pace had rival teams working hard between qualifying sessions and in the afternoon Geoff Lister just managed to edge onto pole position with his GT3R, pipping Mark's time by only three hundredths of a second.
However, the effort proved too much for Lister's car as it suffered differential failure on the next lap and was forced to withdraw from the race.
Sumpter again took the first stint in Sunday's race and, in front of a 10,000-strong crowd, got a cracking start to immediately take control of the GTO category.
In the first ten laps he opened a lead of more than ten seconds but then a safety car period bunched the field up.
Many teams opted to make driver changes early and Sumpter radioed into the team for instructions.
Jordan admitted: "We told Mark to stay out and that was our mistake."
Although Mark led the race overall briefly, he then pitted at mid-point to hand over to Jordan.
They lost around half a minute against their rivals who had all been able to make driver changes without dropping time during the safety car period.
Charlie Butler-Henderson/Stephen Stokoe (Marcos Mantis GTO) led the class for a spell ahead of the Paul Fuller/Marcus Fothergill Porsche, but the Marcos expired with a diff problem, leaving Fuller being hunted down by Jordan.
With less than five minutes to go Jordan caught Fuller and scythed ahead, having clawed back more than 30 seconds. But the race was not over yet.
The Paragon car was suffering a fuel pick up problem out of the hairpin and on the final lap it virtually stopped.
Fuller tried to pounce as Jordan weaved the car to try and pick up some fuel.
It was then a sprint to the line and Jordan held on.
On the podium again, Sumpter reflected on a race that should have been less of a battle for them.
He said: "It really need not have been that hard."
