Organisers are warning a bonfire parade could fold if residents, businesses and organisations do not support the event.
The Littlehampton Bonfire Night is a regular feature on the town's calendar and attracts more than 50,000 people every year.
But organisers say support is desperately needed for the event to survive. They are urging local businesses and residents to take part in the October 28 celebrations.
Richard Cooper, of Littlehampton Bonfire Society, said: "It is very sad that so many local communities have lost their local carnivals this year.
"Summer carnivals at both Arundel and Rustington have been cancelled, together with the Arundel Torchlight procession. The future of the East Preston Bonfire Night is now in doubt.
"The loss of all these local events shows that if local people do not come forward and offer their help and support to the organisers, then they cannot continue to run.
"Quite simply: support your local events or lose them."
Mr Cooper added: "Once such an event is cancelled, it is very difficult for it to be revived in future years.
"Littlehampton is extremely lucky to have thriving bonfire celebrations in the town, but it is up to the local community, both businesses and individuals, to continue to give the event full support if it is to flourish."
Charities to benefit from this year's event will be the St Barnabas Chestnut Tree Appeal, the Air Training Corps 1087 (Arun Valley) Squadron and Worthing, Littlehampton and District Scope.
Mr Cooper said: "One way in which local businesses and organisations can become involved is by entering an illuminated float. This will not only boost our procession, but as we regularly attract crowds in excess of 50,000, will provide first-class publicity for them.
"We are also always looking to recruit marshals to assist on the evening.
"We would be delighted to hear as soon as possible from any individuals or organisations who are willing to assist with marshalling."
There is no set theme for floats, but prizes will be awarded to creative designs.
Entry forms are available by calling 01903 725149 or from David O Jones sports shop in Littlehampton High Street.
Closing date for entries is September 16.
