Four private schools across Sussex will be able to use high-quality video conferencing and slash the costs of buying computers with the help of a new computer network.

Brighton College, Hurstpierpoint College, Lancing College and Eastbourne College have been hooked up to a 'wide area network' which has given them super-fast access to the net.

The colleges can now store and run software on a central server computer and access it with cheap reconditioned PCs.

Simon Ahmet, IT manager at Brighton College, said he will buy 286 PCs for £60 each to connect to the server.

The technology will mean more computers in classrooms.

Mr Ahmet said it will let teachers log on to e-mail accounts and check student records through an internet connection in their homes, said Mr Ahmet.

The wide area network, provided by Brighton firm Pavilion Internet, will cost the colleges around £13,700 each in the first year.
