Lee Povey has won the final of the one-lap sprint event in Preston Park.

The four finalists were rounding the last banking when Crawley rider John Denman (VC Etoile) came through to challenge the local rider (GS Stella).

Povey, who earlier this season won the Sussex Sprint Championship in Preston Park, saw the danger and just held on to win by the width of a tyre, with Sean McClelland (Worthing Excelsior) third.

The other senior winners included Martin Penfold (Sussex Nomads) in the eight and 12-lap events, Jonathan Ford-Dunn (Worthing Excelsior) in the one-lap handicap and Mark Winton (Lewes Wanderers), who was well placed when the bell rang in the unknown distance race.

Horsham rider Graham Kerr (21st Century Airports) won the season-long Sussex Track League Championship with 126 points. Jonathan Ford-Dunn was second with 120 and Hastings rider Robin Thompson (Hargrove Cycles) third with 114.

Chris Dransfield, a 17-year-old junior member of Worthing Excelsior, did well to stay with senior London rider Lee Day (Sport & Publicity) when the pair broke away in the 30-lap circuit race at Hove Park. Day beat Dransfield by just three seconds, but a crash marred the sprint for third place. Fireman Gary Smith (Brighton Mitre) pulled his foot off a pedal and fell heavily, leaving London rider Tom House (VC Londres) to finish third ahead of Sussex riders Sean McClelland (Worthing Excelsior), Tom Leyton (Regent RC) and Peter Baker (Lewes Wanderers). Smith wasn't too badly hurt but needed treatment for grazes to his arms and legs.

The riders in the Sussex 12-hour Championship enjoyed the favourable weather conditions and Dave Shepherd (Rother Valley) won the title for the fifth year in succession, covering 271 miles which was just one and a half miles short of the county record he set last year.

Paul James (Crawley Wheelers) finished runner-up with 264 miles and Brighton Mitre's Tony Richardson was third with 259 miles.

Mike Thyer and Paul Byford, of the Horsham Riders, both rode well in round four of the Southern Area Mountain Bike Championship at Wendover. Thyer was third in the Grand Veteran event, while Byford placed 12th in the Masters race.
