Billy Taylor claimed 6-71 for Sussex Seconds as Kent made 340 to gain a slender first-innings lead of 22 at Hastings.
Sussex, who posted 318 in their first innings, went into the third day of the championship match on 14 without loss.
Pace bowler Taylor sent back Matthew Banes and Chris Bassano cheaply, but Kent fought back strongly on a good wicket with opener Paul Lazenbury (97) and Gareth Jones (81) sharing a fourth-wicket stand of 118.
Richard Furley (49) and James Treadwell (40) later added 71 for the seventh wicket before Furley was bowled by Taylor who got through 28 overs.
Taylor grabbed his sixth victim by removing Paul Bradshaw for eight, and former Kent all-rounder Will House ended the innings by sending back John White and Treadwell in quick succession.
