Langney Sports got off to a flyer in their introduction to Dr Martens League football.
The Red Arrows flew past just before kick-off at Priory Lane, but Sports had to wait until the 71st minute for lift-off when John Snelgrove scrambled home the only goal of their clash with Spalding.
Elsewhere in the Eastern section, Hastings drew 2-2 at Chelmsford while St Leonards won 1-0 at home to Baldock.
Crawley Town also had a win the Premier Division, Matt Woolf and Dean Wordsworth's 84 minute penalty sealing the 2-1 success at Stafford.
Worthing saw off Romford 2-0 in their Ryman Division One opener at Woodside Road, strikers Marc Rice and Ben Carrington doing the damage.
Their south coast rivals Bognor went down 2-0 to fancied Boreham Wood at Nyewood Lane.
Gavin Geddes' hat-trick saw Horsham to a 4-0 win at Hungerford in Division Two while third division Lewes shared a 4-4 draw with Ashford Town.
In the Rich City County League, Wick were the only side to retain a 100 percent record as Andy Willems got the winner in a 3-2 defeat of Hassocks.
Saltdean, Burgess Hill and Eastbourne United were all held at home, Phil Churchill made it five goals in two games for Horsham YMCA as his hat-trick saw off Lancing and Chichester City United celebrated the first points in their short history.
