This Rough Magic was the kind of event that gives performance art a bad name. Too large, too unfocused, lacking any kind of narrative drive and entirely self-indulgent.
"What does it all mean?" I asked myself. I came to the conclusion I didn't care, because the biggest failing of the whole event was that it failed to engage with the audience on any level. The firework display off Brighton Pier stole the show.
Please could Firestarters bear in mind that an audience does need a focus to hold attention and that a poorly executed "extravaganza" is more disappointing than expecting a tempest and getting a shower.
