No doubt Amanda Shepherd, head of tourism, gets a good salary (out of my council tax) for saying the "right thing" (Opinion, August 17). I wish I could get one penny out of the £380 million she says tourists bring into Brighton.

As a resident (and voter), all I get are crowded pavements, crowded restaurants, bars and pubs, occasional vandalism, cleaning my doorsteps every weekend and extra insurance premiums for living in this area.

Ms Shepherd, typically, misses the point. I am not saying all tourists or backpackers or clubbers should go. I am saying enough is enough: Please stop spending council tax money on costly promotions. Let the hotels, clubs or pubs do their own.

Our hospital A&E department has a 27 per cent increase in demand this summer and many of us have to wait hours on trolleys before we can be seen. Visitors are not registered with a local GP so they have no choice but to be taken to hospital after they get drunk or violent or injured in fights. And it will get worse. New clubs and pubs for thousands more are in the pipeline to be opened soon.

Can some of the £380 million go to our hospitals, please?
