Brighton and Hove's Claire Smithson tied up a place in the Great Britain team for the World Junior Championships at Chile in October.

Smithson won the AAA of England under-20 discus at Bedford.

The much-anticipated clash between the Brighton thrower and Exeter's Emma Carpenter, who has thrown further than Claire this season, was settled with the first throw when Claire lobbed the discus out to 48.65m.

The Exeter girl seemed demoralised and finished four metres adrift in second. Claire had four throws further than Emma's best on the day.

Despite several other throws in the high forties, Claire's opening throw was her best of the competition.

Claire then completed a double by winning the shot with 13.72m.

Sussex girls were fifth in the South of England under-20/under-15 Inter-County Championships at Hendon.

They finished behind behind Kent, Middlesex, Dorset and Oxford.

Candie Lintern (Crawley) and Sophie Hales (Steyning) chalked up victories at under-20s, Candie throwing 39.20m. in the discus and Sophie 15min.51.99sec in the 3km walk.

Amala Onoura, from Eaastbourne, was the county's only under-15 winner, taking the 100m in 12.55sec.

Worthing's Emma Perkins scored personal bests when she was fourth in the 75m hurdles (11.97sec) and second in the the high jump.

Sussex boys were 11th. Simon Cooke (Chichester) notched two seconds at under-15s.

He recorded a personal best 14.22m in the shot and 37.98m in the discus.

Lewes Tertiary's Tim Bayley was second in the under-20 400m (49.8sec).

Debutant Bayley helped Belgrave Harriers retain their BAL Gold Cup title, finishing sixth (49.29sec).
