Steve Elms will start as the favourite to win Sunday's Sussex 25-mile Time Trial Championship for the fifth time in six years.

The Crawley ace is in top form after a record-breaking performance in the Norwood Paragon 50-mile event. Elms (In Gear) sped round the Crawley course in a new event record of 1hr.51min.9sec. London star Peter Hamilton (34th Nomads) finished second in 1hr 53min.24sec.

Elms said: "I am going to give the championship my best shot." If all goes according to plan then the big battle is likely to be for the silver and bronze medals.

The contenders include Mark Jones (GS Stella), Dave Pollard and Pete Roberts (In Gear), Steve Lenn (Bognor Regis), Richard Sutton (VC Etoile) and Steve Dennis (East Grinstead).

The HQ is the Steyning Centre and the start is at 7.30am.

Elms suffered a setback in the Surrey five-day race riding for the Sussex team and picked up three punctures, but the 455 miles was useful training for the Paragon's event. Gethin Butler (Gore Bike Wear) won and the best placed Sussex team member was Mark Winton, who finished 39th in the field of 80 riders.

Elms placed 44th and Nick Boore 47th. Boore won a special prize for aggressive riding.

Worthing's Chris McNamara (VC Etoile) and Steve Dennis (East Grinstead) both starred in the East Grinstead club's 75-mile road race.

They were among a group of six who broke away in the first couple of miles. Two of the riders fell back but the remaining four kept the lead and with one 15-mile lap to go, were still one and a half minutes ahead of a chasing group of eight riders.

Approaching the finish, Paul Pickup (Liphook Cycles) went clear to win. Thirty seconds after his teammate, Justin Hoy, won the uphill sprint for second place with McNamara third and Dennis fourth. Mark Sussex (In Gear) placed 10th.

Hampshire's Paul Rogers (VC St Raphael), overall winner of this summer's Goodwood League, won the VTTA 25-mile time trial at Fontwell in 52min.43sec. Storrington's Mark Jones (GS Stella) was second fastest in 55min. 15sec. John Limpus (GS Stella), from Saltdean, placed sixth in 56min.16sec and Keymer's Richard Sutton (VC Etoile) was seventh in 56min.26sec. Rogers is emigrating to New Zealand at the end of the season.
