A 48-year-old man died after his paraglider collapsed in mid-air and sent him falling 100ft to the ground.
The victim, who has not been named, was gliding over Ditchling Beacon when the incident occurred at 2.15pm yesterday.
The Sussex Police helicopter was called to the scene where the man was being treated by an off-duty doctor who had been cycling nearby.
The unconscious man was taken to Worthing Hospital but later died from his injuries.
A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: "The incident happened approximately half a mile west of the Ditchling Beacon car park.
"The ambulance service was called and was told a man had crashed into the top of the scarp.
"The Sussex Police helicopter got to the scene at 2.55pm and the victim arrived at Worthing Hospital at 3.03pm but unfortunately he died some time after that."
She said the man, who was from Luton, Bedfordshire, would not be named until his relatives had been informed.
A Sussex Police helicopter crewman said it was believed the paraglider had collapsed while the man was about 100ft above the ground.
