Claire Smithson has been confirmed in Great Britain's team for the World Junior Championships at Santiago in Chile next month.

The Brighton and Hove discus ace has been in superb form lately, throwing over 50ft at Brighton in mid August and her victory at the British Under 20 Championships at Bedford made sure.

At the moment her great rival, Emma Carpenter from Exeter, has not been named in the team.

Both girls have done the qualifying standard, in fact Emma has thrown over 52 metres this year and leads the British under-20 rankings.

But she is a little suspect in tight competitions and Claire also beat her for the All England Schools title in July.

Last weekend at Exeter in the Southern Women's League, Claire again beat her, getting very close to the 50m mark with 49.12m, one metre further than her rival.

"I was well chuffed when I heard the news, it's really great. I suppose had Emma beaten me at Bedford I may have had to wait until after the Great Britain Under-20 versus the South Western Counties match at Bath the week after next.

"Emma was throwing much better at Exeter and she will have another chance to do well in the under-23 match this weekend and again at Bath. I hope she is included. She has achieved the standard demanded and although she did not throw well at Bedford, we are usually very close together."
