Sussex under-19s are national cricket champions, and it is all down to team spirit.

The side is largely made up of the players who lifted the under-15s crown four years ago.

Sussex beat Warwickshire at Hinckley, Leicestershire, by 154 runs to secure their latest triumph.

Captain Luke Marshall said: "A lot of the players have grown up and matured. There's a better ethos, more discipline. We're a very decent side.

"Everyone can perform and has a first-class attitude. It's not just two or three stars with the rest average. There are 11 good cricketers who have all played their part. A lot of teams we faced this year only had a few really good players."

To illustrate the point, James Chadburn (East Grinstead) cracked an unbeaten 107, Matt Prior (Brighton and Hove) 55, Andrew Hodd (Bexhill) 54, Carl Hopkinson (Haywards Heath) 39, John Snashall (Hastings) 39 and Krishana Singh (Three Bridges) 33 in a Sussex total of 354.

Horsham's Chris Baker then took 3-24 and club-mate Glenn Read 3-20. Patrick Spencer (Brighton and Hove) bowled 25 overs for 1-32 and there were two run outs.

Marshall said: "Everyone played their part. It was a marvellous knock by James and we bowled tightly. Patrick was miserly and fielded well with the wicket not doing a lot but eventually we got there.

"In fact, I was the only one who didn't do that much. I was a bit of a token captain."

Chris Waller, Director of Excellence, said: "It was a good effort. Everybody chipped in. They worked hard. It looks good for the future."

Marshall, from Horsham, along with Spencer, Baker and Chadburn made their under-19s' swansong in the final against Warwickshire.

Waller said: "Those who played their last matches for the under-19s can now look to be pushing for Second X1 cricket."

Sussex: John Snashall (Hastings), Matt Prior (Brighton and Hove), Carl Hopkinson (Haywards Heath), Krishana Singh (Three Bridges), James Chadburn (East Grinstead), Luke Marshall (Horsham), Andrew Hodd (Bexhill), Patrick Spencer (Brighton and Hove), Steven Ades (Brighton and Hove), Glen Read (Horsham), Chris Baker (Horsham). 12th man: Chris Nash (Horsham).

Sussex under-14s drew against Middlesex at Hastings in their last match.

Richard Young (Warden Park School, Cuckfield) hit an unbeaten 50, then Oliver Rayner (St Bede's School, Upper Dicker) took three wickets.

Manager Keith Turk said: "It was a disappointing season. We struggled against some big, physical sides."

Robert Williams (Glynde and Beddingham) took 5-5 as Sussex under-13s beat Sussex Districts XI at Littlehampton.

Manager Chris Pickett said: "The boys make up an improving side."

Sussex under-12s match against Sussex District XI at Glynde and Beddingham was abandoned due to rain.

Sussex Districts XI defeated Sussex under-tens by two wickets in an under under-tens match at St James's in Ditchling.
