A roadside shrine has been set up at the scene of a crash which claimed the life of a young sportsman from Bognor.

Jason Goodrum, aged 20, died last Friday after a horrific accident on the B2166 between Bognor and Chichester in the village of Runcton.

He lived with parents Michael and Janine and 17-year-old brother Russell in Langley Grove, Bognor.

Jason was a leading member of the village cricket team at Pagham and captain of the Saturday second eleven.

Northumberland-born Jason was also a Newcastle United supporter. One of the most poignant tributes at the roadside from family and friends is a small teddy bear dressed in a football hat and scarf.

There is a also a spray of flowers left by a friend and Liverpool fan who shared a friendly rivalry with Jason over football.

The card has the scoreline Liverpool 4 Newcastle 3, but also includes the words of the song Liverpool fans have made their own - You'll Never Walk Alone - as a tribute to Jason.

It says: "Hope to see you sometime in the future. Your friend, Gary."

Last night Jason's father said: "He was a lovely lad and liked by everyone who knew him.

"He was sport-mad but golf was probably his best game and he had just got his handicap down to ten or eleven."

Jason had been working for the last three years at the Royal Norfolk Hotel on Bognor seafront and was planning a career in hotel management.

Hotel manager Tim Clarke said: "He was the sort of chap who would do anything for anybody and was very popular. Everyone here has been very shocked.

"He had been plotting out his career with us and he would have had a very good future in hotel management."

Jason died last Friday morning when he was driving in the westbound lane of the B2166 towards Chichester.

It is believed his Peugeot 106 collided with the back of a Volvo, sending his car into the eastbound carriageway where it was hit by two other vehicles heading towards Bognor.

Police boards appealing for witnesses to the accident have also been put up close to the scene of the crash.
