Twice recently we have set off on potentially glorious walks over the Downs, only for both expeditions to turn into a depressing and ugly experiences.

Both times we have been intimidated by temporary squatters on land which should be attractive and accessible public open space.

First we headed west to the park and cafe in Sheepcote Valley. When we got there the park was surrounded by travellers. We beat a hasty retreat. We didn't get to the park and the cafe lost our trade.

Next we headed east to Telscombe Tye. More travellers and this time loud music was blaring out. We swiftly departed once more.

Two wrecked days and two disappointing family outings. Two councils with two public areas to manage and both have failed miserably.
