Veteran sailor Fred Rogers was awarded six medals for bravery during campaigns in the Second World War but his most heroic effort for one woman is simply being a friend.
Care worker Edna Bond, of Bengairn Avenue, Patcham, Brighton, threw a surprise party for Mr Rogers on Saturday to celebrate his birthday.
As the date is close to the anniversary marking the outbreak of the war, she also wanted to honour his heroism in defending the country.
She invited more than 300 people, including most of her neighbours, to her home before asking Mr Rogers, 84, of Manor Hall Road, Southwick, to come for tea. When he got there, he was shocked to find a full house.
Mrs Bond, 52, said Mr Rogers has helped her get back on her feet during several difficult times in her life and has been a friend to her for more than 20 years.
She said: "A lot of people forget what our heroes did during the war and I wanted everyone to know what a hero he is. He is a hero to me. Whenever I have been in trouble, he has been there for me. He is the most wonderful man in the world."
Mr Rogers will have a smaller celebration for his actual birthday on Sunday.
