Shinewater's Association's 3-0 victory over division two leaders Worthing United may have shocked a few people but player-manager Clive Connell was not one of them.

Prior to Saturday's handsome victory, courtesy of goals from Mark Warren, Ross Osbourne and Ian Gower, Shinewater had only picked up a couple of points but Connell was not too worried.

He said: "We have slowly been getting organised since the manager resigned a week before the season and although the result may have surprised some people, it didn't surprise me."

The 30-year-old added: "Apart from against Hailsham, we have been there or thereabouts against other sides and should have had better results out of the games.

"Therefore, I was not unduly worried and I have said all along it will take until Christmas to get things as we want them."

Buoyed by the emphatic nature of the win, Connell said: "I think we might surprise a few people this season.

"We have always had a good spirit at Shinewater and since Peter Coleman left we have just had to reinstall some confidence in the side."

A Lee Carney hat-trick, including one penalty, helped Broadbridge Heath to a 6-2 win over Mile Oak.

It was the 18-year-old's second hat-trick for Heath since making his debut last season and took his tally for the season to four.

Mark Gilbert, veteran Steve Breach and an own goal accounted for the rest of Heath's goals while Jamie Ash and Dave Ayre replied for the visitors.

Heath are up to fourth in the table ahead of Saturday's clash with leaders Worthing United.

Second-placed Oakwood earned a draw at Storrington but were only two minutes from all three points after Joel O'Hara had given them a 22nd minute lead with his third goal of the season. Simon Dyer struck late for Storrington.

Mark Pulling bagged a hat-trick with goals in the sixth, 16th and 55th minutes while Chris Brace completed the scoring two minutes later as Shoreham ran out 4-1 winners at Wealden. Paul Rider got Wealden's consolation in the 50th minute.

The victory moved Shoreham up to fifth and restored some confidence following their recent FA Cup mauling by Oxford City.

East Grinstead slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Bosham as John Edwards' goal after 15 minutes decided the match.

It was honours even at Lingfield as they drew 0-0 with Crawley Down.

In the John O'Hara League Cup, Westfield lost 1-0 away to Hassocks with Neil Smith netting the only goal.
