Liberal Democrats are proposing an unusual tribute to their former political rival Lord Bassam.
They have called for a new ward in Brighton and Hove to be named after him.
Lord Bassam quit as leader of the Labour led council last year to take up a job as Home Office Minister.
The Liberal Democrats say a new ward taking in part of Tenantry which he represented for many years should be called Bassam ward.
Trefor Hunter, who chairs Brighton and Hove Liberal Democrats, said: "Leaving politics aside, no one can doubt the contribution Lord Bassam has made to Brighton."
They are also suggesting a central Brighton ward running from Grand Parade through Albion Hill should be called Albion ward.
Mr Hunter said: "We want to wish Albion well and it means they'll always have a home in the towns now."
The party has put in a submission to the Local Government Commission for there to be 54 councillors in 19 wards. Currently there are 78 in 26 wards.
Liberal Democrats put in their proposals because they dismissed the plans by the Labour-led council.
The reduction in councillors is suggested so all councillors can play an active part in committees and scrutiny boards.
