I enjoyed the article on Carol Barnes becoming a magistrate (Argus, September 9). However, I would like to remind readers you do not have to be a well-known TV presenter to become a justice of the peace.
Carol was one of 16 new magistrates sworn in for East Sussex at this year's ceremony and one of the five who joined Brighton and Hove Bench.
Anyone aged between 27 and 65 can apply to join. If you meet the six key qualities, can commit the time and we have vacancies, you will be appointed. We need people from all walks of life, so please do not feel shy.
You can get an information pack and an application form from the secretary to the Advisory Committee, Pelham House, St Andrew's Lane, Lewes, telephone 01273 481558. Alternatively, go to: www.open.gov. uk/lcd.
