Michael Evans, managing director of top public relations consultancy the Priory Partnership, has been elected chairman of the 1,600-strong Sussex branch of the Institute of Directors.
Mr Evans, a member of the IoD for 13 years, takes over from Stephanie Parkes-Crick, who is standing down after three years.
He said: "The Institute of Directors in Sussex is in good shape but we are facing a period of rapid change.
"With the growing importance of e-business, it is crucial the IoD continues to attract dynamic young entrepreneurs and continues to be the leading advocate for enterprise, job and wealth creation."
Mr Evans, one of the founders of the Priory Partnership 12 years ago, has conceived and run high-profile PR campaigns for a number of leading public and private sector clients.
In 1989 he created the Sussex Business Awards, now recognised as one of the most successful schemes in Britain, which involves sponsorship by leading corporate and public sector organisations.
His company also runs a successful business awards scheme for Kent.
Mr Evans said business leaders, both men and women, increasingly recognise the IoD is a useful and influential organisation.
"Membership provides an opportunity to network and exchange ideas at the business and social events throughout the year."
Mr Evans is a Quaker and, since 1995, has been chairman of one of the largest independent charities in Sussex, the PACT Community Project, which runs 20 social welfare projects across Sussex.
