Has anyone else noticed the rank hypocrisy of the media and government on issues concerning the protection of children? Politicians pledged to clamp down on sex offenders after Sarah Payne's tragic murder. Yet they seem to ignore or close services that protect children from risks far more common than paedophiles.
The worst of these is the government's failure to bring down urban speed limits, which put far more children at risk than anything else. Last year, 221 children were killed on Britain's roads.
In this area, Brighton and Hove Council is closing important family centres, including the Palmeira Project for autistic children, and is now threatening to close safe and popular play areas at the West Pier and Stoneham Park in Hove.
Is there any hope of the government and newspapers launching a genuine campaign for children's rights?
