More power to the Sage of Sussex's pedalling! How right Adam Trimingham is about our reliance on cars (Argus, September 14). How pleasant it was during the fuel crisis to enjoy cleaner air and less noise.
If nothing else, recent events have taught us how precarious modern civilisation is. A few people strategically blockading key points can quickly bring a whole country to a standstill. Transport, food supplies, even hospital operations, are threatened.
Our society has very foolishly allowed itself to become totally dependent on two commodities which only a century ago were practically unknown - fuel and electricity. The combination of a fuel blockade and a major power failure would be devastating. And it could easily happen.
