Work has begun on a multi-million pound scheme to improve bathing water quality at a seaside resort.
Southern Water is adding an extra cleaning process at its sewage treatment works in Prince William Parade, Eastbourne, to meet European environmental standards.
It is hoped the work will boost tourism.
The £22 million pound project will see waste water undergo biological treatment as well as the usual cleaning process, then flow out to sea through a two-mile pipe.
Lawrence Godsen, project manager, said: "The bathing waters off Eastbourne are already achieving excellent water quality standards.
"Adding the extra cleaning process will further enhance this and bring major benefits to the town."
Bathers should be able to fully enjoy the benefits of cleaner water by May 2002.
East Sussex County Council tourism spokesman Barbara Goodall said: "The seafront is the pride and joy of Eastbourne and it is important it's safe and clean for both residents and visitors."
