Security has been stepped up at an East Sussex holiday camp following the murder of a worker.

The Argus told yesterday how a 31-year-old agency worker was found dead at Camber Sands Holiday Camp after being stabbed repeatedly.

Dozens of police officers were drafted into the usually quiet seaside town following the discovery at 3.45am yesterday.

Forensic teams spent much of the day searching nearby beaches, where earlier a police helicopter had found a pile of burned clothes thought to be linked to the incident.

A 30-year-old man from Lydd, believed to be a former worker at the holiday camp, was arrested yesterday morning and is still helping police with their inquiries.

Meanwhile, security has been increased at the camp, which provides holiday homes for up to 3,000 people.

Queues formed at the gates yesterday as security guards carried out strict checks on anyone entering.

Holidaymaker Charlene Barrett, 20, from Eastbourne, said: "It's shocking. You don't expect something like this to happen when you are on holiday."

Max Carding, communications manager at the camp, said: "We are totally shocked by this incident which appeared to involve only external agents to the camp.

"Nothing of this nature has happened before. Security is in no way compromised. Obviously, our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of the deceased.

"At this stage we are not able to comment any further because of the extensive police investigation."

A Home Office Pathologist has been called in to carry out a post-mortem on the body of the dead man, who was from Folkestone.
