I really admired the look of the proposed sculpture to be built by the entrance to the Royal Pavilion. It's a pity, however, the artist's impression fails to convey one of the essential features of glass - the fact it is translucent.
While not surprised the proposal has thrown up the usual "what a monstrosity" comments, I do wish we could see past the blinkers of so-called conservation and begin to appreciate sculpture such as this is designed to enhance our urban landscape. The contrasts between the flowing ornamentation of the pavilion and the sharp lines of the sculpture will throw each piece into focus.
This has proved successful in the past, most notably with the glass pyramid that fronts the Louvre in Paris - a perfect foil to this classic building.
We need far more of this imaginative kind of work to make Brighton the visually thrilling city it deserves to be - and fewer of those cheesy Welcome to Brighton and Hove billboards that are springing up.
