How I agree with and applaud the views of Norman McLeod's recent letter concerning the lack of local radio. When I was a member of the Radio Council for BBC Radio Brighton, under the management of Bob Gunnell, the station built up a strong team of specialist broadcasters (many of them unpaid volunteers) to provide a comprehensive selection of programmes.
Sussex.
The final two-fingered gesture to local radio was to move the station to Guildford and rent out most of the building in Marlborough Place, retaining only part of the ground floor for local studios. The contents of the record library was just dumped.
It is clear the BBC has no stomach for local radio and it is vital the Radio Authority licenses a series of low-powered community stations. Perhaps those interested should form a pressure group to this end.
